How to Light Your Wood Stove Safely and Efficiently

Hunter Stoves Australia

The difference between a wood stove that performs brilliantly and one that smokes, smoulders, and fogs up the glass often comes down to technique, particularly at the start. Getting the fire lit correctly sets up a clean, efficient burn from the first load. Getting it wrong means fighting the stove for the rest of the evening.

Here is how to light your Parkray wood stove safely and efficiently.

Before You Light: Dry Wood Is Everything

No technique will compensate for wet firewood. Wood with a moisture content above 20% produces significantly more smoke, more particulate emissions, and less heat than properly seasoned wood. It also deposits creosote in the flue at a faster rate, which is both inefficient and a potential fire hazard over time.

Use a moisture meter to check your firewood before buying or burning. Properly seasoned hardwood, split and stored in a dry, ventilated location for at least 12 months, is your most important input.

The Parkray Aspect range accepts logs up to 400mm (Aspect 5 Eco), 500mm (Aspect 8 Eco), and 540mm (Aspect 14 Eco). Use the correct size for your model.

Lighting the Fire: Step by Step

1. Open the air controls fully. Before lighting, ensure the primary and secondary air controls are fully open. The fire needs maximum airflow in its early stages to establish a strong draw and bring the firebox up to temperature.

2. Build a kindling base. Place two or three small logs at the base of the firebox, then stack kindling above them in a loose, open formation. A small log cabin or criss-cross structure works well. Good airflow through the kindling is essential. A dense, packed pile will starve the fire of oxygen before it can establish.

3. Place firelighters on top. Natural firelighters are preferable to chemical alternatives, which can produce fumes that affect the glass and firebox surfaces over time. Place one or two on top of the kindling stack and light from above, working downward.

4. Leave the door slightly ajar for the first few minutes. This allows a larger volume of air in during ignition. Once the kindling is burning well and the firebox has warmed, close the door and allow the stove to operate as designed.

5. Add small logs once the kindling is established. Once the fire is burning confidently and the glass has cleared, add two or three small-to-medium logs. Do not overload the firebox at this stage. Build the fire gradually.

6. Adjust the air controls. As the fire builds, begin closing the air controls to your preferred setting. The Parkray Aspect range’s pre-heated airwash system keeps the glass clear by directing a curtain of warm air across the inside of the glass, so you can manage airflow without sacrificing visibility.

What TripleBurn Does for You

Once the fire is well established, the Parkray’s TripleBurn Technology takes over. Three precision-engineered air streams (primary, secondary, and tertiary) work together to achieve near-complete combustion of both the wood and the gases it produces. The result is more heat from each piece of wood, less particulate matter in the flue, and a cleaner-burning stove that earns its efficiency rating in real use.

The glass stays clearer for longer. The flue stays cleaner. And you get more heat per log.
